We are so proud to celebrate the success of the latest Running the Railways challenge – the On the Hour challenge.

Over 24 hours, fundraiser Alex Rigby and more than 300 supporters took part in an extraordinary relay challenge between Freshfield and Hightown stations – completing a 5k every hour through the day and night.

Despite warm conditions leading to the event being adapted from a run to a walk, every hour, a new team stepped forward, with local businesses, community groups and supporters from across the Liverpool City Region joining together to carry the challenge forward.

Together, participants completed 794 individual 5ks, an incredible 3,970km in total – the same as 2,466 miles and nearly three back-to-back marathons.

The challenge really bought people together, with participants ranging in age from just 3 to over 80 and people of all abilities taking part.

Alex Rigby said:

“These challenges are only a success because of the people involved. What we can achieve when we come together as a community is incredible. I’m so grateful for the continued support year after year from everyone who takes part.”

This year’s event was made possible thanks to the continued support of headline sponsor Clan Contracting and partner Merseyrail, alongside a wide range of local businesses who supported participants along the route.

This is the third event in the Running the Railways series, which has now raised over £110,000 for Centre 56.

For more than 50 years, Centre 56 has supported children aged 2–12 and their families who have experienced domestic abuse or crisis situations, providing specialist childcare, emotional support and a safe space to rebuild their lives.

Every mile completed as part of Running the Railways contributes to that mission -helping ensure more children feel safe, supported and able to move forward.

A huge thank you to everyone who walked, donated, volunteered or cheered the team on.
